  • I called AccuTemp because our AC had suddenly stopped cooling properly, and two specific rooms, our living room and master bedroom, had stopped getting airflow from the vents altogether. The important part is that this system had been working fine for about 10 years. Something had clearly changed, and I wanted someone to figure out what happened and get it working again. AccuTemp charged us $79 to come out and diagnose the problem. Their conclusion was that our 4-ton HVAC system was connected to ductwork only capable of supporting approximately 2.5 tons, creating insufficient airflow. Their proposed solution was essentially to replace the HVAC system and redo the ductwork. The estimate was over $12,000. That didn’t sit right with me, so I got a second opinion. I told the second company exactly the same thing: “It was working fine, then these two rooms suddenly stopped blowing air and now the whole system isn’t cooling well.” They went into the attic. Less than 10 minutes later: “Found your problem.” An insulation panel inside the airbox had come unglued and fallen over, physically blocking airflow to the branch of ductwork feeding our living room and bedroom. They glued the insulation panel back into place, cleaned up some of the ductwork while they were there, and the airflow immediately and dramatically improved throughout the house. They were done in less than an hour. Total cost: about $400. Everything has been working fine ever since. Maybe our existing ductwork isn’t theoretically ideal for the size of our HVAC system. I’m not disputing that. But that wasn’t the problem I called AccuTemp to solve. Two rooms that had previously been getting airflow suddenly stopped getting airflow. Instead of finding out WHY, AccuTemp recommended more than $12,000 worth of replacement equipment and ductwork while completely missing a simple physical blockage that another HVAC company found within 10 minutes. And I paid AccuTemp $79 for that diagnosis. That’s the part that bothers me most. Basic troubleshooting based on the symptoms we gave them would have led directly toward the actual problem. I can’t speak to their intentions, but based on my experience, I did not feel like the priority was diagnosing and repairing the problem I actually had. I felt like my service call turned into an opportunity to sell me a new HVAC system and ductwork. I’m very glad I got a second opinion before spending $12,000+ on something I didn’t need.
