  • I have yet to hire Eco Performance Builders, but I wanted to write an mention the great customer service and coordination in coming out, spending over an hour, and giving us prompt quotes. In a world of no-shows, wrong days, and flakey companies, EPB stood out as a class act. I have 1 project to solve first, but after that, I'll chose these guys. Also, Kyle gives a lot of info and confidence in working with EPB with his deep knowledge and experience.

  • Terrific service, fair prices and flexibility when we needed it. We had a wonderful experience with Eco Performance Builders.

  • Eco was recommended to me and after working with them in January 2026, I, too, can recommend this local business - competent, customer services oriented and most of all, superb teamwork end to end. While the technology and the hardwares used are employed by many HVAC providers, the operation touches the attic to the crawl space and will take several consecutive days to complete, and the cost is not inexpensive, so organization, time management and customer care are critical to a desired outcome; and these are ECO's fortes. From the initial call to the project end with a sign off from the city inspector, everyone including ECO's outside contractors worked with me; they thought of things that I did not even notice. I could not have asked for a better construction/improvement outfit. I wish all my home projects can be done in such an effective and efficient way.

  • I had Eco Performance Builders install a ducted heat pump, attic sealing and insulation, and a heat pump water heater at my house last year. I found the experience of working with them to be exceptionally positive. From start to finish, every member of the team I worked with was highly professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. I always felt like I was talking to a friendly expert, not a salesperson. They patiently answered all of my questions and worked with me to create a HVAC system that was perfectly tailored to my house. The installation work was smooth and efficient, and they were able to accommodate a few small change orders (e.g. relocation of a dryer vent) at a reasonable price. Their process for collecting rebates and incentives was very well-managed as well. Overall, I'm very pleased with my new heat pump and water heater. My house feels comfortable year round, and it feels great to live in a fully electrified home. I'd enthusiastically recommend Eco Perfomance Builders to anyone.

  • We needed a new heater and went for a heat pump. Their approach is top shelf: our uninsulated house was insulated, new ductwork installed, recommended window replacement to allow for smaller system. One month in, and it clearly was the right investment. Thoughtful design, quality work, and great crews.

  • I had Eco Performance Builders install two heat pump HVAC systems with new ducts, new attic insulation, and an ERV system for my house. From start to finish, they were very prompt, knowledgeable and professional. Their quote was reasonable for the expertise provided — all worth it for a quality job well done.

  • Great service from project planning, design,. permitting and delivery. Highly detail oriented crew that gets the job done well and on time.

  • I have now completed my second project with Eco Performance Builders. The first was a heat pump water heater in 2023 and the latest just completed project was a ducted heat pump hvac system with new insulation. I am thrilled with them both. The water heater was a challenging installation because of space limitations but they recommended a wonderful unit and with imagination and determination made it work in my space. The hvac system design was comprehensive, engineered, and perfect for my needs. The system itself is quiet and amazingly efficient. The staff was professional, considerate, good communicators and all-around nice people. It all began with Kyle who handled the initial inspection, estimates and contracts, as well as graciously answering my infinite questions, and included the stellar Alberto (crew lead on both jobs) and his truly excellent team, the insulation crew (great containment work), production manager, tech person, office specialists and more. I appreciated the big things but also the small things such as daily cleanup. While it took a good bit of time for them to get to my projects (because they are very very good, they are also very very popular), the work itself was completed on target and worth waiting for. I highly recommend Eco Performance Builders and only wish I had more projects to do with them.

  • We had a wonderful experience working with Eco Performance Builders. Their team including Kyle, Nick, David, Miroslav, and Paul did such an excellent and thorough job. They are so professional and kind. They truly went above and beyond to make me and my family comfortable during the installation process. And our home feels so comfortable now because of their great work. Thank you so much Eco Performance Builders!

  • Eco Performance Builders recently installed a mini-split heat pump system in our home and insulated our attic spaces. From the initial estimate walk-through to the final day of the job, their team was professional, courteous, and thorough. Every employee we worked with was top-notch—knowledgeable, respectful, and clearly committed to quality work. Don’t be discouraged by the lead time—this is a long-term investment that pays off in comfort, energy efficiency, and home value. We also found them to be competitively priced. We’re extremely happy with the results and highly recommend Eco Performance Builders to anyone considering a home energy upgrade.

  • We recently hired Eco Performance Builders to replace an old gas furnace that was functioning poorly with a heat pump. It was a big job, and we’re extremely happy with how the project went, from start to finish. Every person we dealt with at EPB was very knowledgeable, professional and helpful. They did a thorough assessment and testing of our home’s needs to come up with a customized system design that would work most efficiently for us. We can already feel a difference in how quickly and evenly our house heats up and retains heat, and we’re delighted that we can’t hear the unit operating at all. Our initial contact was with Kyle Bosworth, who helped figure out the scope and design of the project, and who shepherded it through to completion. Kyle was thorough, scientific in his approach, patient and a great communicator. He helped us make good decisions along the way (including putting down a vapor barrier in the crawl space below the house), and he and Denise Vera helped navigate the complex rebate application process. The entire crew that worked on the project, headed up by Nick Duarte, was reliable, careful and pleasant to deal with. They stuck to the schedule, kept us informed of things that arose along the way, and cleaned up at the end of every day. We highly recommend Eco Performance Builders if you’re thinking of making any improvements to your home’s HVAC systems. They’re absolutely first-rate!

  • Eco Performance Builders were easy to work with, experienced and competent, and provided solid advice with interest and respect, as we grappled with the best approach. Kyle, an engineer, helped us figure out the best material to meet our needs while also increasing fire resistance. After insulating our basement, walls, and attic, we are looking forward to many cozy seasons.

  • EPB replaced our furnace, ductwork, and attic insulation with a properly sized heat pump, excellent insulation, and sealed everything well. The system is very quiet and our house has stayed very comfortable during summer heat waves (we have not been through a winter with the system so far). The proper sizing, insulation, and sealing allow this to be a very energy efficient system. Kyle worked with me and answered a ton of question from my first inquiry to the project's completion. The crew was excellent, professional, efficient, and clean. They answered all of my questions and addressed any concerns. Everything about the crew gave me added confidence in the quality of the work. Huge thanks to the crew lead Alberto, Jordan and Cuong on the installation, and Paul, Eddy, Alex, and Omar on the insulation team. I highly recommend EPB. They are more expensive than other options, but by using proper Building Science they determine the right, most efficient system for your home and the quality of the work is excellent.

  • After a comprehensive review and extensive consultation, EPB addressed the inadequate insulation and ductwork, installing a Fujitsu heat pump. Kyle, Nick, and their entire team approached every aspect of the planning and installation with exceptional care and consideration. They made the process seamless for us, and we are incredibly grateful for their expert recommendations. EPB took care of the entire permitting process and product registration. I would wholeheartedly recommend their work to anyone seeking a company that excels in their craft and genuinely prioritizes the details. Thanks to them, we now have a comfortable home, and that is truly invaluable!

  • I had first contacted EPB when I first bought the house but at the time I was not in the position to afford any updates. I contacted Kyle again last December to implement all the suggestions they offered. The work was completed in the time promised, their crew always cleaned up after themselves at the end of each work day, the wooden floors were always protected at the beginning of each workday. I can feel the difference in the water heater. Heating system and Air conditioner. We are very satisfied with the work done and I have been recommending the company to all my friends and acquaintances

  • Thank you to the whole Eco team for the outstanding job you did on our home! We're so glad we found your company and had the pleasure of working with your team. Thank you Jorge/Alberto and your guy's team and subcontractors. Everyone was very helpful throughout the entire project, answered all our questions, accommodated all of our requests, cleaned up the house nicely everyday, and displayed high quality workmanship. We very much appreciated the communication from all members of the team as well. As far as the work itself, we have felt a measurable difference since the insulation and HVAC work was installed! We've noticed the house can stay in the low 70s during the recent hotter days (ie. 90s) without even turning the heat pump on!! And the entire system, from heat pump to air handler, is deathly quiet; what a difference from the previous equipment. We've already been telling friends, family and co-workers of Eco and the wonderful job you all did. Thanks again

  • Eco Performance was thorough, competent and responsive throughout the project. Kyle Bosworth carefully evaluated our home, including ductwork and insulation, to determine an appropriate heat pump solution. He provided a detailed bid, which, when all elements were taken into account, was in line with other bids, and answered all my questions. We were happy to have an expert who thought through what was needed. We were very impressed with Kyle Bosworth's knowledge and expertise, the care he took to evaluate the house with testing, and willingness to answer a lot of questions--which continued long after we signed the contract. Eco was able to schedule the work when it worked for us. The work was performed competently, quickly and cleanly. The Eco insulation team, headed by Paul, was efficient and courteous, despite working in hot, tight spaces. Ryan Bosworth and the installation team were all polite, hard-working, and competent, and the work moved quickly. If asked, they took the time to explain what they were doing and how the system worked. Ryan followed up with respect to the Fujitsu control panel that did not work properly, and replaced it. We are very happy with our new heat pump for heating, and look forward to having it next summer for cooling. When replacing a gas furnace with a heat pump, please be aware that costs on the Internet for heat pump equipment alone are not representative of the true cost. The actual cost will depend on your home. For example, our old asbetos-wrapped ducts needed to be replaced. Our 1920 walls had no insulation, which is needed to really improve how it feels inside, and the attic insulation was old and thin. In our home, we had to replace knob & tube wiring to allow insulation to be pumped in the walls. Some HVAC companies will give a bid to install a heat pump, perhaps with ducts, but will not assess your home's other needs. Eco Performance provided a comprehensive analysis from which we could make an informed decision.

  • We received a terrific 83- gallon heat pump hot water heater, leaving gas-fired water heater behind. Reliable! Sustainable! PGE granted us a higher baseline electric allowance for changing this heat source.

  • I recently worked with Eco Performance Builders who installed heat pumps in my home in the Oakland hills. Given the configuration of my home it was necessary to install two separate heat pump units, as well as two new duct systems. I was very impressed with the comprehensive way that the EPB staff approached this project, working to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of these new heating/cooling systems while factoring in some unique facets of my home. The planners were very knowledgeable about these systems and did a good job explaining them to me. I was equally impressed with the EPB crew who did the installation of the new systems. They were very hard working, efficient and congenial. I was especially impressed with the way that the onsite project manager coordinated the different aspects of the installation as he kept the project moving along. The project was completed within the projected timeline. I am very pleased with the new systems. With both the heating and cooling, they are very quiet and throw off subtle but comfortable air. Eco Performance Builders had been recommended to me as a company who were leaders and experts in the area of this energy-efficient approach to heating and cooling. The company exceeded my expectations in how they handled this project and I would highly recommend EPB to others.

  • TLDR: I would go a winter without heat just to have Eco Performance replace my system over another contractor. It almost doesn't feel right to compare Eco Performance with the other Bay Area HVAC companies because Eco is operating at such a higher level. Earlier this year we completed a pretty large scope of work with Eco. This included 2 new ducted mini split systems with all new ducting, crawl space encapsulation, attic air sealing, insulation, and a heat pump water heater. I spent about a year researching options and getting quotes before signing a contract with ECO and there isn't anyone else in the Bay Area doing the level of work they are. I had ~10 companies provide a bid including all of the highest rate shops on Yelp. The majority of them spent less than 20 minutes in my house, did not run any sort of a load calculation, and promptly provided a mid 5 digit bid wanting to start right away. They size their HVAC systems based on "square footage and experience" and don't do any real ducting design. All of these quotes came in +/- 20% of one another, and all of these companies said they could start within a month. It was clear from the first meeting with Eco that their process is completely different. The first on-site assessment was over an hour and it was immediately apparent that Kyle was the domain expert I had been looking for. Eco followed up with a detailed quote explaining the process which included a room by room load calculation. This means they measure and draw a floor plan for your entire house including windows and insulation, run a blower door test to determine air leakage, and then run a computer model to determine how much air flow each room needs to maintain an even temperature across the house. This is just one example of the dozens of differences between what ECO does vs. the competition. To my surprise ECOs quote was competitive with the others I received when comparing similar systems and equipment. We also waited almost 6 months from contract signing to work start. Once the work started everything was top notch. We've had a lot of work done on our house this year and ECOs crew was among the best. Every person who came was prompt, respectful, and clean. I was prodding the city inspector with questions and he even mentioned that ECO is the best in the bay area. We're super happy with the end product and would enthusiastically hire ECO again.

  • Knowledgeable and professional folks whose aim is to make your home comfortable and energy efficient while delivering healthy indoor air quality.

  • Eco Performance Builders are The Best in HVAC and energy improvements. Customer service is top notch. We are extremely pleased with choosing them and would hire them again for any service they provide without question or comparison shopping. This company is beyond any other hvac company out there in terms of application of the latest in heating, cooling, insulation and energy efficiency. An independent inspector told me they are the best in the industry and inspecting their work is a formality. I asked a number of other hvac companies about my duct work, air sealing, a/c options and insulation. Almost all of them just wanted to replace my existing a/c or heater, most without even looking at my ducts or insulation, never mind alternative options. EPB performed air sealing, replacement of existing traditional heating cooling system to a highly efficient ducted mini split system (no this is not with large room cassettes) performed air sealing, installed a heat recovery ventilation system with separate ducting, replaced my gas water heater with a high efficiency electric water heater (enabling me to get off gas completely and switch to a more friendly electric pg&e billing plan) and finally did wall and attic insulation. They performed extensive testing before and after and presented me with a plan of improvements. They also handled all the rebate documentation for us. The work took them just over 3 weeks to complete, this over Christmas and New Years! Their customer service was top notch with every employee I came in contact with. I could not recommend these guys more highly. These guys set a major standard in construction in so many ways. Some of what my wife really liked about them was how clean, polite, considerate and efficient they were. They were always within their time frame (when we booked them months in advance they told us the date and time they would start work and they made it exactly on that date and time!) and they worked within their stated hours with consistency. They kept good communication about their work and we still managed to have a nice Christmas and New Years at home during this time. I had to book them months in advance waiting for them specifically without a/c and heat and it was worth the wait. This was an investment that will pay for itself now and long term in lower maintenance costs, lower future replacement costs, intangible safety improvements and air quality improvements and generalized improvement in home comfort and aesthetics.

  • Amazing experience with Keith and Erik. We're in a newer home with a fujitsu AC that just stopped working. None of the codes made any sense and none of the simple trouble shooting tricks gave results that made sense. Our AC and it's troubles were a mystery. Keith and Erik worked tirelessly to find the issue. Their customer support, good humor and product knowledge was simply the best. If we could give them 10 stars we would. I would recommend them to anyone, even my elderly parents. Eco Performance Builders are the best!

  • Kyle and the team at Eco Performance were responsive, professional, knowledgeable, and patient (with our expanding timeline). They conducted a thorough energy audit, installed our heating/cooling system, and insulated both underfloor and in the attic space. Most helpfully, Kyle helped us navigate the PGE rebate program. Of all the work we have been doing, they have been at the top of our list for quality work and business practices.

  • I moved into a 100-year old home a couple months ago and wanted insulation in my sub area. I called around and looked at recommendations and had a long conversation with Eco performance builders one evening. Since I knew this relatively drafty house would fail a blower test I wanted to just cut to the chase and install insulation. The guys came today to do the work and did a beautiful job. It was superquick, very well-managed, the bill came very quickly afterwards, I can pay electronically, they totally understand that this is about energy savings, protecting the environment, and a more comfortable home. As an extensively trained real estate broker with eco-broker certification, I really appreciate working with a team that understands the concepts and, for instance, and won't put insulation right up against knob and tube wiring!

  • We have been doing a big remodel on a fixer-upper in south Berkeley and we feel really lucky to have found EPB. Kyle, who was in charge of our project, was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and competent. Bill, the on-site point person, was also a pleasure to work with. Clear communication, high quality work, fair prices. They also did all of the paperwork for the energy evaluation and PGE Home Upgrade rebates, which came through even slightly higher than estimated. The work they did for us: tankless water heater, air sealing, attic insulation, floor insulation, cathedral ceiling insulation, and some wall insulation. Highly recommended!

  • Eco Performance Builders did an excellent job of assisting me to replace my old heater in Livermore, Calif and add air conditioning. They conducted an energy assessment which provided the information required to correctly size units and infrastructure required to heat and cool the home. Using the information from the audit they recommended several options I could choose from and spent time discussing the pros and cons of each choice. Once I made my choices Eco Performance Builders obtained all the permits and facilitated the rebates I was eligible for. I lived in the home for 30 years with two heater replacements. It was never comfortable despite putting in double paned windows. The Eco Performance Builders solution to heating and cooling my home has greatly increased the comfort level and we are all very pleased. The work was done quickly and efficiently and all work areas were left clean and in order.

  • So glad I went with EPB! Kyle and Bill are great project managers, communicate clearly and consistently, and respond quickly and thoroughly. (When ever I had a question I knew I could call or email one of them and get things addressed immediately. Even though EPB schedule was full, they made me feel like my project was important and still done with the best efforts and maximum attention and quality. The rest of the team on my project - Jorje, Tom, Kevin, and a few others from EPB whose names I did not catch, the tapers and rockers Brad and his crew, and the EPB office staff are also fantastic - pleasant and professional, quick to respond, and knowledgeable. I also was super security conscious because I have two indoor cats; everyone was very respectful, making sure that the furries did not escape, and that doors and gates were locked at the end of the day. And everything was really cleaned up pretty thoroughly during stages and at the end of the job. My spaces look gorgeous, my house is cozy (the true test will be summer, of course; I will try to do an update), the air smells/feels better if I do have the house closed up, and my Fujitsu units are so quiet! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Eco Performance Builders and their contractors. You helped make my house into more of my dream house!

About Eco Performance Builders

Eco Performance Builders counts 16 years of retrofit work around the Bay Area, with the Oakland EcoBlock among the larger projects it points to. The shop works out of Walnut Creek in Contra Costa County. It also takes jobs in Lafayette, Orinda and Danville, and reaches into Alameda County.

Heat pump retrofits out of Walnut Creek

Utility gas heats 60% of housing units in Walnut Creek, per the American Community Survey (2024). The median home there was built in 1974, per the same survey.

The company says its licensed crews design and install the work themselves. Jobs run from single-family retrofits to multi-family electrification for property owners and HOAs. Its website dates the start of its installing to 2008.

Ducted systems, mini-splits and envelope work

The services it names are heat pump HVAC, whole-home electrification, attic and wall insulation, air sealing, water heating and indoor air quality. On the equipment side, its website lists ducted heat pumps, hydronic air handlers, ductless mini-splits and radiant systems. It also explains when a ducted system fits better than a mini-split.

The company ties this to testing. Its site describes the founder's shift in view after measuring the performance and air quality of homes he had built. In its duct work, the filter goes in at the return grille, which keeps particulates out of the return duct and makes filter changes easy.

Five stars across 32 Google reviews

Eco Performance Builders holds a 5.0 rating from 32 Google reviews. Reviewers most often describe heat pump installs paired with new ducts and attic insulation, and they credit the crews with patient explanations and careful design work. Several mention permitting through to the city sign-off. A few advise that lead times are long and the cost is real.

The office keeps weekday hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, and closes on weekends.

The company says it holds Energy Star Home Performance certification and HEEHRA rebate certification, and it names Green Point Rated Contractor of the Year and Energy Upgrade California Contractor of the Year among its awards.
